What is it?

Helps is the Spirit-enabled capacity to strengthen another person’s ministry by providing the support necessary for it to succeed. It overlaps with service but emphasizes coming alongside someone else’s work.

The weight and responsibility

The gift of helps often receives little public attention while carrying enormous ministry value. Helpers must resist believing their work matters less simply because it happens behind the scenes. Leaders must also resist exploiting dependable people.

You may have this gift if...

Others may have observed that:

You make other people’s work more effective.

You anticipate what leaders, teams, or ministries need in order to function well.

You are dependable without needing to be in front.

You strengthen the calling of others through practical support.

You may have noticed that:

You enjoy helping someone else succeed.

You do not need to be the person in front.

You frequently think, “What can I take off their plate?”

Supporting someone else’s calling feels meaningful rather than secondary.

FINDING THE GIFT IN SCRIPTURE

Biblical Case Study: Priscilla and Aquila

Read: Acts 18:1–3, 18–28; Romans 16:3–4

Priscilla and Aquila first appear in Acts as a married couple who share Paul’s trade of tentmaking. Paul stays and works with them in Corinth, and they become part of the ministry community around him.

Later, they travel with Paul to Ephesus. There they encounter Apollos, an eloquent and knowledgeable teacher who understands the way of the Lord but has an incomplete understanding of Christian baptism. Instead of embarrassing him publicly, Priscilla and Aquila take him aside and explain the way of God more accurately.

That scene matters because their contribution is not centered on becoming the visible ministry themselves.

They strengthen someone else who is already gifted.

Apollos goes on to become an influential teacher, and the church benefits because Priscilla and Aquila were willing to come alongside him with what he needed.

Paul later calls them his “fellow workers in Christ Jesus” and says they risked their necks for his life. Their support is not passive. It is costly partnership.

What are we seeing?

Helps is not lesser ministry.

It is ministry that often multiplies what God is doing through someone else.

The helper sees gaps, burdens, missing pieces, or practical needs and quietly makes another person’s work more sustainable and effective.

That can include logistics, hospitality, correction, encouragement, protection, administration, or simply being the dependable person who makes ministry possible.

The weight of helps

Helpers are especially vulnerable to being taken for granted.

Because they are dependable, people may keep asking. Because they are willing, leaders may stop noticing the cost. Because the work is often invisible, helpers may begin to believe their contribution is less spiritual than the work happening on stage.

That is false.

Paul includes helps among the Spirit’s gifts to the body.

But giftedness does not erase boundaries. Helping is not the same as becoming responsible for everything everyone else refuses to carry.

Leaders have a responsibility to honor, protect, and not exploit those who serve in supportive roles.

Now look at your own life

Do not ask only whether you like helping people.

Ask whether there is a repeated pattern in which ministries, leaders, teams, or individuals become stronger because you came alongside them with exactly the kind of support they needed.

What feels completely foreign?

What creates curiosity?

Where have I already seen fruit?

Whose work has become easier or more effective because you were involved?

Do you find joy in strengthening someone else without needing equal visibility?

Are you able to help without becoming indispensable or resentful?

A final thought

Some people are called to carry the microphone.

Others may be gifted to make sure the person holding it can faithfully keep going.

The body needs both.
