What Are Spiritual Gifts?

A spiritual gift is a grace given by God through the Holy Spirit for the benefit of others and the building up of the body of Christ.

Spiritual gifts are not medals, personality types, ministry titles, or proof that one person is more spiritually mature than another. They are entrustments. God places something in each believer that He intends to express through them for the good of someone else.

A spiritual gift is not primarily evidence that you are special. It is evidence that somebody else needs what God placed in you.

Every believer matters. Nobody receives every gift, and nobody is unnecessary. God distributes different gifts throughout the body so that we depend on Him and learn to receive from one another.

Gifts Leave Evidence

Your gifts may feel ordinary because they are often woven into how you naturally respond to people. But when God repeatedly works through you, fruit appears. People understand, receive care, find courage, begin to believe, move toward healing, and grow closer to God.

Who gets stronger when you show up, and what does God consistently produce through you?

More Than a Talent

Talents, skills, personality, experience, and spiritual gifts can overlap, but they are not identical. A talent describes something you may do well. A spiritual gift points toward how the Holy Spirit empowers you to serve others, strengthen the church, and participate in God’s work.

Gifting is not the same as spiritual maturity. Spiritual gifts help describe what a Christian may be equipped to do. The fruit of the Spirit provides evidence of who that Christian is becoming.

Discovery Happens in Relationship

An assessment can help you recognize patterns, but it cannot issue a final verdict about what God placed in you. Gifts are discovered through Scripture, prayer, service, repeated fruit, and affirmation from trusted people who have witnessed God working through your life.

Ask them:

When have you seen God use me in a way that genuinely helped you or somebody else?

Then listen for what repeats.
