Faith
Trust God in the storm... without pretending there is no storm.
All Christians are called to faith. The gift of Faith appears to describe an unusual Spirit-given confidence in God’s character, power, or ability in circumstances where others may struggle to trust. This is not necessarily greater holiness. It is a grace that can strengthen the faith of an entire community.
WHAT IS THE GIFT OF FAITH?
Faith helps a community keep trusting God when fear, uncertainty, or impossible circumstances make hope difficult.
Someone with this gift may remain spiritually grounded when others panic. They may carry unusual confidence that God is still present, still able, and still faithful even when the outcome is unclear.
At its healthiest, Faith does not deny reality.
It does not call fear unbelief.
It does not demand a painless outcome.
It does not confuse confidence in God with certainty about what God will do.
Faith sees the storm clearly and still says:
God is here. God is faithful. Fear does not get the final word.
YOU MAY RECOGNIZE THIS GIFT WHEN...
Others may have noticed...
- Your trust in God strengthens people during uncertain circumstances.
- You often remain spiritually grounded when others panic.
- You encourage people to believe God is still working when circumstances look impossible.
- You are willing to act on conviction even without guarantees.
You may have noticed...
- You experience unusual confidence that God can intervene.
- Fear does not always control your decisions when obedience requires risk.
- You often find yourself believing on behalf of a discouraged community.
- You can hold hope without denying reality.
THE GIFT IN SCRIPTURE
PAUL IN THE STORM
Paul is traveling to Rome as a prisoner when a violent storm overtakes the ship.
For days, the crew sees neither sun nor stars.
Cargo is thrown overboard.
Eventually, Acts says that all hope of being saved is abandoned.
Then Paul stands up.
He tells the people that God has spoken and that their lives will be preserved even though the ship will be lost.
Paul does not pretend the storm is not real.
He does not promise comfort.
His confidence is rooted in God’s faithfulness.
And his faith becomes communal.
His confidence strengthens people who have lost hope.
That is one of the gifts of Faith at its best:
God gives one person courage that helps an entire community keep trusting too.
EXPLORE THE SCRIPTURES
WHEN FAITH IS HEALTHY
Healthy Faith...
- strengthens others without shaming them.
- holds hope without denying reality.
- trusts God without demanding a specific outcome.
- acts courageously without ignoring practical wisdom.
- makes room for grief, questions, and uncertainty.
- keeps the focus on God’s character rather than the believer’s confidence.
THE WEIGHT OF THE GIFT
People with strong faith must be careful not to confuse confidence in God with certainty about a preferred outcome.
God is trustworthy.
Our interpretation of what He will do can still be wrong.
Faith should never become spiritual bravado.
It should never become:
If you really believed, you would not be afraid.
Scripture gives us faithful people who grieve, tremble, question, and still trust God.
Faith also does not remove practical wisdom.
Paul trusts God in the storm and still gives practical instructions about eating, staying with the ship, and preparing for survival.
Faith is not denial.
It is trust inside reality.
ASK THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU
WE ARE FORMED PERSONALLY.
WE ARE REVEALED RELATIONALLY.
Ask:
- Have my confidence and trust ever helped you keep going?
- Do I hold hope without minimizing difficult reality?
- Do I make room for other people’s fear and grief?
- Can I trust God without insisting that I know exactly what He will do?
- Where might my confidence become pressure for someone else?
TRY THE GIFT
PRACTICE FAITH
Think of one situation where fear is louder than hope.
Do not deny the difficulty.
Name it honestly.
Then ask:
What do I know about God’s character?
What can I trust even if I cannot predict the outcome?
What faithful action is still available to me?
Choose one act of trust that does not require pretending certainty.
GUIDED PRAYER
God,
If You have entrusted Faith to me, teach me to trust You without pretending I control the outcome.
Let my confidence strengthen people rather than shame them.
Help me remain honest about fear, loss, and uncertainty while still remembering who You are.
Give me courage when obedience requires risk and humility when I do not know what You will do next.
Use my faith to help others keep trusting You in the storm.
