Prophecy
Carry truth carefully. Call people toward faithfulness.
Prophecy is the Spirit-enabled ability to communicate a message that brings God’s truth to bear on a person, group, circumstance, or moment. Biblically, prophecy may strengthen, encourage, console, warn, convict, or call people back toward faithfulness. In the New Testament church, prophetic words are meant to be tested, weighed, and discerned in community.
WHAT IS THE GIFT OF PROPHECY?
Prophecy brings spiritually significant truth into a moment where that truth needs to be heard.
Someone with this gift may sense that a particular Scripture, warning, encouragement, or truth has unusual relevance to a person or community. They may notice spiritual drift, inconsistency, compromise, or a needed call back toward faithfulness before others do.
At its healthiest, Prophecy does not make the messenger central.
It helps people respond to God.
The goal is not spiritual spectacle, prediction for prediction’s sake, or becoming the person who always claims to know what God is doing.
The goal is faithful communication that produces clarity, preparation, courage, repentance, comfort, or obedience.
YOU MAY RECOGNIZE THIS GIFT WHEN...
Others may have noticed...
- You sometimes articulate something spiritually significant that others sensed but could not put into words.
- Your words frequently bring conviction, clarity, encouragement, or renewed faith.
- You seem especially sensitive when a community is drifting from what God desires.
- People have told you that something you shared was unusually timely or spiritually piercing.
- You often call people toward faithfulness rather than merely making them comfortable.
You may have noticed...
- You feel a strong responsibility to communicate what you believe God is highlighting.
- Certain Scriptures repeatedly become deeply relevant to situations around you.
- You are sensitive to spiritual inconsistency or compromise.
- You sometimes sense that a truth needs to be spoken even when remaining quiet would be easier.
THE GIFT IN SCRIPTURE
AGABUS
Acts explicitly identifies Agabus as a prophet.
In one scene, Agabus warns that a severe famine is coming.
Notice what the church does with the prophetic message.
They do not build a platform around Agabus.
They do not obsess over the prediction.
They prepare to serve.
The disciples organize relief for believers in Judea.
The prophetic word moves the community toward faithful action.
Years later, Agabus warns Paul that suffering and imprisonment await him in Jerusalem.
The community interprets that warning as a reason Paul should not go.
Paul discerns the situation differently and continues toward Jerusalem.
That distinction matters.
Agabus gives the warning.
He does not take control of Paul’s decision.
Prophecy can offer real spiritual insight without removing another believer’s responsibility to discern their own obedience.
Prophecy is not control.
EXPLORE THE SCRIPTURES
WHEN PROPHECY IS HEALTHY
Healthy Prophecy...
- serves faithfulness rather than spectacle.
- remains grounded in Scripture.
- welcomes testing and discernment.
- strengthens, warns, comforts, or clarifies without controlling.
- keeps the messenger from becoming the center.
- leaves room for other believers to discern their own faithful response.
THE WEIGHT OF THE GIFT
Few phrases carry more spiritual weight than:
God told me.
When God’s name is attached to our words, the pressure on another person can increase dramatically.
That is why humility matters.
Someone with prophetic gifting should become more careful with spiritual authority... not less careful.
Mature prophetic language may sound like:
I have a strong sense that this may be something God is highlighting. I want you to pray about it and weigh it.
I could be wrong, but this Scripture keeps coming to mind.
I believe this needs to be said, but I want our community to discern it together.
Humility does not weaken prophecy.
Humility protects the people prophecy is meant to serve.
Prophecy also carries the temptation of certainty, attention, and fear.
The goal is not to enjoy being the person with the hard word.
The goal is always the good of God’s people.
ASK THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU
WE ARE FORMED PERSONALLY.
WE ARE REVEALED RELATIONALLY.
Ask:
- When have my words brought clarity, conviction, encouragement, or preparation?
- Do I tend to call people toward faithfulness without trying to control them?
- Am I humble when someone questions or tests what I believe I have heard?
- Do trusted believers recognize a consistent pattern of spiritually timely words in me?
- Where might I need stronger accountability or more careful language?
TRY THE GIFT
PRACTICE PROPHECY
If a Scripture, warning, encouragement, or spiritual impression feels especially significant for someone, do not rush to present it as certainty.
Pause.
Ask:
Is this consistent with Scripture?
Would this strengthen, clarify, warn, or help?
Am I willing to be wrong?
Can I share this without pressuring the person?
Then offer it humbly and leave room for discernment.
Pay attention to the fruit.
GUIDED PRAYER
God,
If You have entrusted Prophecy to me, teach me to carry truth with humility, courage, and love.
Keep me grounded in Scripture, accountable to community, and willing to have what I perceive tested.
Protect me from certainty that outruns wisdom, from using Your name to pressure people, and from making spiritual moments about me.
Let whatever I speak help people respond more faithfully to You.
Amen.
How does Prophecy differ from Discernment?
Prophecy communicates a message meant to strengthen, encourage, console, or call people toward faithfulness. Discernment helps a community weigh what it hears and recognize what aligns with God’s truth. These gifts need one another. As 1 Corinthians 14:29 teaches, prophetic words are to be weighed by others; no impression should place someone beyond Scripture or shared accountability.
