DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS
What is it?
Discernment of spirits is the Spirit-enabled ability to distinguish the spiritual source or character of what is occurring. This is more specific than ordinary wisdom. It concerns discerning what is consistent with the Holy Spirit, merely human, deceptive, or spiritually destructive.

The weight and responsibility
Discernment can easily become suspicion. Being discerning does not mean assuming everyone is dangerous, spiritually compromised, or demonically influenced. True discernment should produce wisdom, protection, prayer, and truth—not paranoia or superiority.
You may have this gift if...
Others may have observed that:
You frequently recognize when something spiritually does not “fit,” even when it sounds convincing.
You help others distinguish between truth, emotional pressure, human impulse, and spiritual deception.
Your concerns often prove worth testing rather than dismissing.
You may have noticed that:
You instinctively test spiritual claims rather than accepting them immediately.
You are sensitive to motivations, spiritual atmosphere, or inconsistencies.
You regularly compare what you hear with Scripture and the character of Christ.
You feel responsibility to protect others from spiritual deception.
FINDING THE GIFT IN SCRIPTURE
Biblical Case Study: Paul and the Slave Girl
Read: Acts 16:16–18
Paul and his companions are in Philippi when they repeatedly encounter a slave girl described as having a spirit of divination. Her owners make money from her fortune-telling.
As she follows Paul and the others, she cries out that they are servants of the Most High God who proclaim the way of salvation.
On the surface, what she says sounds true.
That is exactly why this scene is helpful.
Discernment is not merely the ability to recognize an obviously false sentence. Sometimes words can sound accurate while the spiritual source, purpose, or effect behind them is not aligned with God.
After this continues for many days, Paul turns and commands the spirit to come out of her in the name of Jesus Christ. The spirit leaves her.
What are we seeing?
Paul does not judge the message only by its vocabulary.
He recognizes a spiritual reality beneath the words.
The source matters.
The effect matters.
The larger context matters.
This is why John later tells believers not to believe every spirit, but to “test the spirits.” Biblical discernment is not cynicism; it is tested spiritual perception.
The weight of discernment
People who often sense when something is wrong can become chronically suspicious. That is not maturity.
Discernment should be held with humility. A sense that something is spiritually off is an invitation to pray, test, compare with Scripture, seek wise community, and pay attention—not necessarily permission to accuse.
Discernment must also avoid labeling ordinary disagreement as spiritual darkness. Another Christian can disagree with you without being deceived.
And the goal is protection and truth, not the satisfaction of being the person who “saw through” everyone else.
Now look at your own life
Do not ask only whether you are skeptical.
Ask whether there is a repeated pattern in which you recognize spiritual incongruence, help others test what is happening, and your discernment leads toward truth, protection, prayer, and greater faithfulness.

What sounds familiar?
What has other people consistently seen in me?
What feels completely foreign?
What creates curiosity?
Where have I already seen fruit?
Do your concerns usually produce prayer and careful testing—or anxiety and accusation?
Have trusted believers confirmed that you sometimes recognize spiritual dynamics others miss?
Are you humble enough to admit when your discernment was wrong?
A final thought
Discernment is not the gift of distrusting everything.
It is the grace to test what is happening carefully enough that truth can be trusted and deception does not have to be feared.
