SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Word of Wisdom
See what matters most. Find the faithful path.
The Word of Wisdom is a Spirit-enabled capacity to recognize and communicate wisdom for a particular situation. Scripture does not give a technical description of exactly how this gift operates, but at minimum it involves more than knowing what is true. Wisdom asks: What is the faithful thing to do with what we know?
WHAT IS THE WORD OF WISDOM?
Wisdom helps people recognize a faithful path when a situation is complicated, emotionally charged, or unclear.
Someone with this gift may see beneath the obvious problem, hold multiple realities together, recognize consequences others miss, or understand how biblical truth applies in a particular moment.
Wisdom is not the same thing as intelligence.
Intelligence may tell you what is happening.
Wisdom asks:
What does this mean?
What matters most?
What are the likely consequences?
What would faithfulness require now?
At its healthiest, Wisdom brings clarity without pretending every situation has a simple answer.
YOU MAY RECOGNIZE THIS GIFT WHEN...
Others may have noticed...
- People regularly seek your perspective before difficult decisions.
- You frequently see the deeper issue beneath an obvious problem.
- You bring calm clarity to complicated situations.
- Your advice integrates truth, people, timing, and consequences.
- You can identify a faithful path forward when others feel stuck.
You may have noticed...
- You instinctively ask what wisdom requires, not merely what is technically permissible.
- You can often see multiple sides of an issue.
- You think carefully about long-term consequences.
- You frequently sense how biblical truth applies practically to a specific circumstance.
THE GIFT IN SCRIPTURE
SOLOMON AND THE TWO MOTHERS
Two women come before Solomon with an impossible dispute.
Both have recently given birth.
One child has died.
Both claim that the living child belongs to them.
There are no witnesses.
No obvious evidence.
No simple fact that resolves the case.
The obvious information is not enough.
Solomon needs wisdom.
His response creates a situation that reveals something hidden:
The heart of the true mother.
One woman is willing to see the child divided.
The other gives up her claim rather than see the child harmed.
Solomon recognizes what the facts alone could not show him.
He sees what matters most and uses that insight to protect life and establish justice.
Wisdom is not simply having more information.
It is recognizing what faithfulness requires when the answer is not obvious.
EXPLORE THE SCRIPTURES
WHEN WISDOM IS HEALTHY
Healthy Wisdom...
- listens before answering.
- sees beyond the surface issue.
- holds truth, people, timing, and consequences together.
- remains open to correction.
- knows when to speak and when to wait.
- helps people move toward faithfulness without creating dependence on the wise person.
THE WEIGHT OF THE GIFT
People who are regularly sought for advice can slowly begin believing their instincts should not be questioned.
That is dangerous.
Wisdom must remain teachable.
James says wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, merciful, and sincere.
If your wisdom cannot be challenged, tested, or corrected, it has moved away from the character Scripture gives it.
Wise people must also resist giving answers too quickly.
Sometimes wisdom means speaking.
Sometimes it means listening longer.
Sometimes it means admitting:
I do not know yet.
And wisdom should help people become more discerning themselves... not more dependent on the person who gives good advice.
ASK THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU
WE ARE FORMED PERSONALLY.
WE ARE REVEALED RELATIONALLY.
Ask:
- When have I helped you see a faithful next step in a complicated situation?
- Do I tend to see consequences or connections other people miss?
- Does my counsel create peace and clarity... or dependence on my opinion?
- Am I open to being challenged when I believe I see the answer?
- Where might I need to listen longer before offering wisdom?
TRY THE GIFT
PRACTICE WISDOM
Think of a real situation that feels tangled.
Before offering advice, slow down.
Ask:
What do I know?
What am I assuming?
Who is affected?
What consequences could follow?
What does Scripture make clear?
What remains uncertain?
Then ask one more question:
What would faithfulness look like here... not simply what would be easiest?
Pay attention to whether wisdom emerges as you make room for prayer, truth, people, timing, and consequences.
GUIDED PRAYER
God,
If You have entrusted Wisdom to me, teach me to steward it with humility.
Help me see beneath the obvious without becoming overly confident in my own instincts.
Make me patient enough to listen, honest enough to say when I do not know, and teachable enough to receive correction.
Let the wisdom I offer reflect Your character... pure, peaceable, gentle, merciful, sincere, and open to reason.
Use my perspective to help people move toward faithfulness, not dependence on me.
Amen.
How does Word of Wisdom differ from Word of Knowledge?
Word of Wisdom emphasizes the faithful response to a situation. Word of Knowledge emphasizes insight or understanding that can help clarify what is happening. First Corinthians 12:8 names both without giving a detailed technical definition. Hold impressions humbly, test them against Scripture, and invite trusted people to help you discern.
