Listen for the question. Make Jesus understandable.
Evangelism is the Spirit-enabled ability to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ in ways that help people understand and respond to the gospel. Every Christian participates in Christ’s mission, but evangelists often carry unusual desire, effectiveness, or fruitfulness in helping people who are spiritually curious, disconnected, or unfamiliar with Christianity encounter Jesus.
WHAT IS THE GIFT OF EVANGELISM?
Evangelism helps people encounter the good news of Jesus in language they can actually receive.
Someone with this gift may naturally move toward spiritual conversations, notice when a person is curious, translate Christian language into accessible words, or connect someone’s real questions to the gospel.
At its healthiest, Evangelism does not treat people like projects.
It listens.
It pays attention.
It tells the truth clearly.
It invites without manipulating.
The goal is not to force closure on every conversation.
The goal is faithful witness that helps another person take an honest next step toward Jesus.
YOU MAY RECOGNIZE THIS GIFT WHEN...
Others may have noticed...
- You explain the gospel in ways non-Christians can understand.
- Spiritual conversations seem to happen naturally around you.
- People often become curious about Jesus through conversations with you.
- You are comfortable moving toward people who are spiritually unfamiliar with Christianity.
You may have noticed...
- You frequently think about people who do not yet know Christ.
- You are comfortable initiating spiritual conversations.
- You feel genuine excitement when someone begins exploring Jesus.
- You instinctively translate Christian language into words outsiders can understand.
THE GIFT IN SCRIPTURE
PHILIP AND THE ETHIOPIAN OFFICIAL
Philip is led toward a desert road where he encounters an Ethiopian official reading from Isaiah.
The Spirit prompts Philip to go near the chariot.
But notice how Philip begins.
He does not launch into a speech.
He asks a question:
Do you understand what you are reading?
The official responds honestly and invites Philip to sit with him.
Evangelism begins here with attentiveness, proximity, curiosity, and listening.
Philip starts with the question the man is already asking.
Then he connects that question to Jesus.
This is evangelism as translation.
Not changing the gospel.
Helping another person understand it.
Later, the official asks for baptism himself.
The response is not forced.
The man understands enough to ask for his own next step.
That is a beautiful picture of evangelism that invites rather than manipulates.
EXPLORE THE SCRIPTURES
WHEN EVANGELISM IS HEALTHY
Healthy Evangelism...
- listens before speaking.
- meets people where they actually are.
- translates Christian language without diluting the gospel.
- invites rather than pressures.
- values people more than conversion statistics.
- trusts that not every conversation needs immediate closure.
- helps people take honest next steps toward Jesus.
THE WEIGHT OF THE GIFT
Because evangelists deeply desire people to know Jesus, they can become overly focused on decisions, numbers, or quick outcomes.
But people are not projects.
A faithful evangelist does not need to force closure on every conversation.
Sometimes the next step is answering a question.
Sometimes it is sharing your story.
Sometimes it is explaining the gospel clearly.
Sometimes it is simply creating enough safety for someone to keep exploring.
Evangelism also requires truth.
Removing repentance, the cross, Jesus’ lordship, or the cost of discipleship in order to make Christianity easier to accept is not kindness.
But truth should be carried with patience and love... not pressure.
ASK THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU
WE ARE FORMED PERSONALLY.
WE ARE REVEALED RELATIONALLY.
Ask:
- Do spiritual conversations seem to happen naturally around me?
- Have I helped you understand Jesus or the gospel more clearly?
- Do I listen well enough to understand the question a person is actually asking?
- Do people feel invited by me... or pressured?
- Have people taken meaningful spiritual steps through conversations with me?
TRY THE GIFT
PRACTICE EVANGELISM
Think of one person in your life who is spiritually curious, disconnected, skeptical, or unfamiliar with Christianity.
Do not begin with a speech.
Begin with a question.
Ask something that helps you understand what they actually think about God, Jesus, faith, or church.
Listen carefully.
Then respond to the question they are really asking.
Do not force the conversation farther than trust allows.
Pay attention to what happens when evangelism begins with curiosity rather than pressure.
GUIDED PRAYER
Jesus,
If You have entrusted Evangelism to me, teach me to speak about You with clarity, courage, patience, and love.
Help me listen before I speak.
Show me where people are already asking questions and where You may already be opening doors.
Keep me from treating people like projects or measuring faithfulness only by immediate decisions.
Give me courage to tell the truth without manipulation and humility to trust You with the outcome.
Let my words help people see You more clearly.
Amen.
