SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Interpretation of Tongues
Make the message understandable so the body can be built up.
Interpretation of Tongues is the Spirit-enabled ability to communicate the meaning of a message spoken in tongues so that the gathered church can understand and be edified.
WHAT IS THE GIFT OF INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES?
Interpretation serves understanding.
When Tongues are expressed publicly, Interpretation allows the gathered community to receive meaning rather than remain outside the moment.
The goal is not to make a mysterious experience more dramatic.
The goal is edification.
At its healthiest, Interpretation is humble, understandable, accountable, and open to discernment.
Having a spiritual impression does not remove the community’s responsibility to weigh what is shared.
YOU MAY RECOGNIZE THIS GIFT WHEN...
Others may have noticed...
- You have communicated a coherent meaning following a message in Tongues in a way that strengthened the gathered church.
- Mature believers have recognized consistency between your interpretation and biblical truth.
You may have noticed...
- During Tongues you sometimes receive a strong sense of meaning or message.
- You feel responsibility to communicate what you perceive rather than draw attention to the phenomenon itself.
- You are comfortable allowing others to weigh what you share.
THE GIFT IN SCRIPTURE
THE CORINTHIAN CHURCH
Scripture does not give us a named individual and explicitly identify them as an interpreter of Tongues.
So the clearest case study is the church situation where Paul actually teaches how the gift should function.
The Corinthian church is spiritually enthusiastic, but its gatherings have become disorderly.
Paul does not tell them to stop exercising spiritual gifts.
He gives them a governing principle:
The gathered church should be built up.
If someone speaks in a tongue publicly and nobody understands, the rest of the church cannot receive the content.
Interpretation changes that.
Meaning becomes understandable.
The community can be edified.
Paul even gives practical boundaries: if no interpreter is present, the speaker should remain silent publicly.
That means spiritual restraint can itself be spiritual maturity.
Love asks whether the gift will serve the people present.

WHEN INTERPRETATION IS HEALTHY
Healthy Interpretation...
- makes meaning understandable.
- serves the gathered community.
- remains consistent with Scripture.
- welcomes testing and discernment.
- does not claim more certainty than is warranted.
- keeps attention on the truth communicated rather than the interpreter.
THE WEIGHT OF THE GIFT
Interpretation is not a performance skill.
Its purpose is understanding and edification.
Someone offering an interpretation should resist speaking with more certainty than is warranted.
“This is what I believe the interpretation is” leaves room for discernment.
“God said this, and nobody may question it” creates spiritual pressure.
A message that contradicts Scripture or the character of Christ does not gain authority simply because it occurred in a spiritual setting.
And because the gift exists for the common good, the interpreter should be comfortable remaining silent when clarity is not present.
Having a gift does not mean it must be exercised every time.
ASK THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW YOU
WE ARE FORMED PERSONALLY.
WE ARE REVEALED RELATIONALLY.
Ask:
- Has interpretation occurred as a repeated pattern rather than a one-time guess?
- Does what I share build up the community?
- Am I willing to remain silent when interpretation is not clear?
- Am I comfortable with mature believers weighing what I believe I received?
- Does my interpretation direct attention toward truth rather than toward me?
TRY THE GIFT
PRACTICE INTERPRETATION
If Tongues are expressed publicly and you sense meaning, do not rush.
Ask:
Is the meaning clear?
Is it consistent with Scripture?
Will sharing it serve the community?
Can I offer it humbly and allow others to weigh it?
If the answer is no, restraint may be the faithful response.
If you do share, use language that leaves room for discernment.
GUIDED PRAYER
Holy Spirit,
If You have entrusted Interpretation to me, teach me to serve the body with humility and clarity.
Help me communicate only what I genuinely believe You are giving and to remain silent when I do not have clarity.
Keep me accountable to Scripture, community, and love.
Protect me from spiritual pressure or certainty beyond what You have actually given.
Let interpretation turn confusion into understanding and help the body be built up.
Amen.
